Shipping a vehicle can feel a little overwhelming, especially if it's your first time. You have a lot of questions - how do I avoid hidden fees? Which auto transport companies can be trusted to deliver your car in one piece? Do not worry, this guide provides accurate and detailed information on all you need to know to ship your car seamlessly. Here's the breakdown:

A -  Asking for a Quote

Before requesting a quote, you need to do your research.  Here's what it means:

  1. Research 2–3 reputable carriers (auto transporters).
  2. Select the option that best suits your budget and needs.
  3. Then request a quote.  Check if the quote includes insurance, taxes, and fuel fees. It helps you know the total cost to avoid surprises in the future.

B - Booking Your Shipment

Many auto transport companies use responsive websites to acquire your details.  Enter the field for pick-up location.  Provide accurate car details  - condition, modifications, running/non-running.

C - Choosing Your Transport Type

Select your shipment option - open or enclosed?  In 2024, over 23 million vehicles globally were moved via specialized car carriers (open-air + enclosed). Open transport is common and affordable.

Enclosed transport is for luxury or expensive vehicles. This option is much safer and faster - but quite costly.

  • Documentation and Preparation
  • Before pick-up, you are expected to remove all personal items.
  • Take and document car photos - a complete walk-around.
  • Ensure the vehicle has only 1/4 of a tank of fuel.

E - Pick-up Expectation

Here is what you should expect during pick-up:  The driver or expert from your selected auto company will call you 2–12 hours before arrival.   Afterwards, your vehicle will undergo a quick inspection.

Subsequently, you will be asked to sign a Bill of Lading as proof of delivering your vehicle to the carrier, also known as a shipping contract.

F - Following Your Shipment

Reputable auto shipping companies provide means of tracking your vehicle, whether via the company portal or driver updates.

It's essential to know where your car is at every stop.

H - Delivery Day (Final Inspection)

The driver unloads your car, and it is your moment to inspect it.  You will compare the vehicle's condition to the Bill of Lading. If everything is correct, pay any remaining balance (if the company uses COD).

Z - Zero Stress Tips

  • Avoid unexpectedly low quotes. Chances are excellent that it's dubious, and you're about to be scammed.
  • Book early - 1–2 weeks is ideal.
  • Work with licensed, insured transporters only.

Caveat:

Don't inspect your vehicle at night. Only in the daytime for proper confirmation.

What is the best time of the year to ship your car?

Understanding the best time of the year to ship your car determines how much it costs to your wallet and how much stress you experience. So many car owners often ask this question - this blog is designed to give you all the answers you need. The truth is: there's no one-size-fits-all solution. While there are seasons when shipping is cheaper, faster, and less stressful, it all depends on weather and traffic patterns across the U.S. (for U.S. residents).
