It happens to almost every shipper. Your auto transport driver has just arrived with your vehicle safely at the destination. He's standing right in front of you, and you're wondering: “Should I tip the driver?”

The dilemma is real. Tipping isn't mandatory, but many shippers tip drivers for exceptional service, especially when the driver handles the vehicle professionally and goes the extra mile.

In this guide, we will explain whether tipping is customary, typical amounts, and broader delivery-day etiquette—helping you make an informed decision.

Is Tipping Actually Expected?

No. Tipping an auto transport driver is not legally required, and it's generally not included in the shipping quote.

Drivers are paid already for the transportation service, so as a customer, you don't have to feel obligated to add a gratuity. In this case, tipping is a courtesy, not an expectation.

Not tipping doesn't automatically mean poor etiquette.

How Much Do People Typically Tip?

When you wish to tip a driver, deciding on the right amount can be tough sometimes. One thing to keep in mind: no industry-wide fixed tipping rate.   It completely depends on your discretion—$20–$150 per vehicle still depends on you. Here is a rough 2026 range guide: T

When a Tip Feels Especially Warranted

Tipping can make sense when the driver has to put in substantially more effort than usual to ensure a safe, seamless delivery. Here are a few cases:

  • Difficulty or remote delivery: The driver had to navigate a rough road, remote address, tight access, or another location challenge.
  • High-Value or Classic Vehicle: The driver demonstrates extra caution when loading, securing, and unloading a high-value or classic vehicle.
  • Proactive communication: The driver keeps you informed about arrival times, delays, or route challenges—saving you guesswork and worry.

Other Delivery-Day Etiquette

This is where you work with the driver, because it's not enough for the driver to arrive.

This helps and supports the driver. It's not all about monetary tipping. Drivers appreciate it when you:

  • Are available during the agreed delivery windows. Keep your phone accessible for ETA updates.
  • Make the vehicle accessible, particularly during pickup/delivery. Vehicle should be parked in a clustered garage where navigating out is hard because surrounding vehicles or objects block the way.
  • Do the walkaround together. Before signing the bill of lading, compare the vehicle with the pickup bill of lading and your photos. If anything doesn't add up, escalate the issue right then and there.
  • Review the Bill of Lading before signing.

Don't just sign. Notice any new damage? Document it on the BOL and take a photo.

What Drivers and Customers Knew

Delivery windows are estimates—not guarantees. When the auto transport company estimates your delivery as 2 weeks, you might get your vehicle earlier or 2 days later. Many factors, including route changes, traffic, weather, and additional pickups and deliveries, can shift the driver's arrival time.

Conclusion

Tipping your driver is nice, but it’s not an obligation, and that’s where etiquette comes in.   Being ready, available, and communicative, and performing proper inspections at delivery, is just as important as any tip.
